Some apps in the online stores can waste time, money and memory space on your gadget. apps.jpgThis series scours the internet and finds the handiest apps that are not a passing fad. The following group of apps has been tested here in our home office.

Instant Heart Rate — This neat app can read your beats per minute (BPM) without sticking on wires or wearing an expensive watch like a Fitbit. When you want to check your BPM, all you need to do is place your finger on the camera on the back of your phone and watch the EKG graph. The app can also track and store readings, so you can monitor your heart health.

Some benefits of the app include:

  • It is compatible with Android devices, Apple products and Windows phones.
  • It is free unless you want the upgraded version, which is $1.99.
  • The monitor is fairly accurate and responsive.

1Password — If you are tired of forgetting or misplacing passwords, try 1Password. This app can store passwords and usernames to your favorite sites. It can also hold your PIN codes, documents, credit cards, etc.

Some benefits of the app include:

  • It is compatible with Android devices and Apple products.
  • It is free.
  • You can download the app on your Mac or Windows computer.
  • A master password locks your app, so no one but you can use it.

Draw Something — It’s a fun game you can play with family and friends wherever they are. Players take turns drawing the given word and the other player must guess the word using only the picture and letters provided. If you enjoy “Pictionary” or “charades,” you should download this app.

Some benefits of the app include:

  • It is compatible with Android devices and Apple products.
  • It is free.
  • It offers a fun way to interact with your children or grandchildren.

GPS Car parking apps — Can’t remember where you parked? Then you are among the 56 percent of drivers who forget where they left their car. There are dozens of unique apps that can help find your car, such as Find My Car Smarter or Car Finder AR. However, if you already use the Google app and account, you can place markers on a map and follow your GPS using the feature Google Now. If you need a low-tech or free app, you can use the camera app already built into your phone to snap a photo of your parking spot.

Some benefits of the app include:

  • There are versions compatible with Android devices, Apple products and Windows phones.
  • Easy to use and interpret.
  • Some can locate gas stations, ATMs, parking lots, etc.

Download these apps and tell us what you think about them, or comment below about your favorite app for older adults. Look for Part 4 soon! Follow our blog and stay current in apps, home care and much more.
