Healthy Eating Tips for Seniors

Caregiver-and-ClientWith so many options at the grocery store, it can be daunting to make healthy choices for cooking. It’s easy to get stuck in a rut making familiar recipes, but summer is the perfect time to choose some seasonal foods and make quick changes. It’s important to maintain a healthy diet and stay hydrated, especially as you age. Next time you’re cooking, try some simple and healthy alternatives!

Make Your Plate Colorful: Colorful fruits and vegetables are often the most nutrient dense. At meals, try to fill your plate with a rainbow of colors to make sure you are receiving the proper nutrition. Try unique fruits or make a salad with chopped vegetables. You will be getting more fiber and antioxidants from meals featuring these choices.

Choose Healthy Grains: Whole grains are extremely healthy and are also more filling. Begin incorporating whole wheat options into your everyday diet, and try substituting brown rice for your usual choices. These grains contain fewer preservatives and provide more fiber.

Drink Water: It’s easy to forget to drink water, and dehydration can quickly become a problem. Drink a glass of water with each meal and keep a full glass nearby when you’re home.

Consult Your Doctor: If you experience any issues relating to eating or digestion, consult your doctor. Loss of appetite or problems chewing (among other issues) can be common, but you should make your doctor aware.
